Yesterday it was Jim West calling attention to an interesting post on  
the Better Bibles Blog about understanding and conveying in another  
language the nuances of idiomatic expressions. Today I would urge  
list-members to take a gander (better: read and ponder) Suzanne  
McCarthy's note on these phrases in the pasatoral letters that some  
have found befuddling. often kicked back and forth in this forum. She  
claims, with some cogency, that these phrases must refer to the   
faithfulness of a husband or wife to his
or her marriage-partner, not to the number of marriages that a man or
