I am wondering if any of the readers of this list know of 1st year Greek
reading material that goes beyond isolated phrases or sentences. I have
only found one text book so far that contains little stories at that
level ("/Let's Study Greek/" by Clarence B. Hale, Moody Publishers). I
know that there are Greek teachers on this list. Have you ever written
little stories as reading exercises for beginning students? I find that
it is much easier to remember the meaning of words and absorb the
paradigms when I read material in a larger context than merely a
vocabulary list or a phrase. Not only that, it is very motivating for a
beginning reader to be able to actually read through a simple story at a
decent pace and understand everything. I wish that there were a reader
available that would offer graduated stories with vocabulary restricted
to one or two paradigms at a time. I think it is time to develop
teaching methods that don't just cater to the analytical language
learner. Maybe that would help to reduce the 80-90% attrition between
first and second year Greek classes.
