There are several distinct advantages, one is that additional folders could be maintained with FAQ's or other documents that help answer common questions. A second is that the digests have hyperlinks embedded, I like being able to link from the summary listing directly to the post that is of interest. The security can be maintained, the groups are moderated. In addition, searching is very easy, something that appears to be a common question here.

I host several groups on Yahoo! Groups, and several groups on
ibiblio.org. I don't like the advertisements on Yahoo! Groups, the
archive format is pretty useless, and the archives eventually expire. I
like this system better. We have a Web site we can use to place content
for our users:

http://www.ibiblio.org/bgreek/

Only moderators can stick things up there, but that's been sufficient so
far, and we could certainly put FAQs on the site. You can find our mail
archives here:

To me, these archives are extremely valuable, and there's nothing as
good on Yahoo. And you *can* search these archives using Google. I sent
a separate mail on the topic just a minute ago, since people might want
to refer to it, and it's easier to find with the right subject heading.
