In follow up of this I just found this very interesting assertion:

"Masoretic readings are preferred by the New Testament authors when
they reference Job, Zechariah and Malachi"

This assertion is made at the following very interesting website that
I just came across:

http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Pines/7224/Rick/Septuagint/spexecsum.htm

According to the same page:

"Thus, Matthew differs in sense from the Septuagint 9 times out of 54
quotations. Three of these disagreements occur when Matthew quotes
from Isaiah."

And later:

"If we group Luke's writings, Luke and Acts, we find an agreement rate
of 97%. Clearly, the gospels tend to diverge from the Septuagint most
frequently, with Matthew showing the most disagreement.
Looking instead at the source books, the agreement between the New
Testament and the Septuagintal versions of Job, Micah and Malachi is
quite poor"

Also:

"Thus, Matthew differs in sense from the Masoretic text 16 times out
of 54 quotations. Nine of these disagreements occur when Matthew
quotes from Isaiah. "

Ok, so the bottom line seems to be that Matthew probably did not
discern the idea of "hem" from the LXX but ultimately from the Hebrew.
