[B-Greek] Matt 27.30 Why the Imperfect ETUPTON

ELABON is an aorist. It's not an historical present. The imperfect ETUPTON
can have a couple of possible forces:
And after spitting on him, they took the reed and started hitting him on the
head [ingressive]
And after spitting on him, they took the reed and were hitting him on the
head [progressive]

By the way, the KALAMOS may not be a real "staff", but just a reed given to
Jesus to mock his supposed claim to kingship. It would go along with the
crown of thorns. In that case, the soldiers would essentially be teasing him
and humiliating him by breaking the flimsy reed of his kingly pretension to
pieces over his head--as opposed to giving him a heavy beating with
something heavy and substantial.

KAI EMPTUSANTES EIS AUTON ELABON TON KALAMON KAI
ETUPTON EIS THN KEFALHN AUTOU

Why is ETUPTON in the Imperfect and not the Present?
These guys grab (ELABON) the staff/reed and then
subsequently begin beating him. So, should we not
expect the Present or even the Future tense, not the
Past tense? The beating comes later after they pick up
this staff.
