[B-Greek] PEIRAZW--"Dare"? (Acts 24:6)

While in 21.26-29 it indicates that Paul and the men entered the temple, it does not indicate in which part of the temple they were apprehended. It indicates that he did so

DIAGGELLWN THN EKPLHRWSIN TWN hHMERWN TOU hAGNISMOU hEW hOU PROSHNEXQH hUPER hENOS EKASTOU AUTWN hH PROSFORA

He thus made know his intention to make a sacrifice which would involve trespassing into the area forbidden to the goyim. It would appear that upon his making known what he intended that he was then apprehended. It does not therefore specifically indicate that he had the daring to pass beyond the limits with gentiles but rather that the Jews perceived that he was about to do so (incorrectly, since the men were not gentiles). While I hesitate to rely upon etymology, all uses of the root πειρά(σ) indicate an attempt or a testing rather than having the chutzpah to do something.

Dear George,

You’ll recall that when Paul was apprehended in the Temple, the accusation made against him was that he had already brought Gentiles into the (Jewish-only part of the) Temple and had defiled it (Acts 21:28-29). So their own story was that they caught him after the act of profanation, not in the attempt. If Trophimus had been with him when the altercation happened, both of them probably would have been killed on the spot. Beyond the word PEIRAZW itself in Acts 24;6, is there anything that leads you to believe that the Jewish leaders would naturally assert that Paul had made an unsuccessful attempt to profane the Temple, as opposed to having actually profaned the Temple?

When you say "dared" you imply that he accomplished this action yet you say "we caught him" which to me implies that he failed. I think the usual translation of "attempted" or "tried" indicates what is being conveyed. It is, of course, possible that one can succeed in doing something and then be caught, but it seems that what is in view is something prophylactic.

hOS [PAULOS] KAI TO hIERON EPEIRASEN BEBHLWSAI, hON KAI EKRATHSAMEN (Acts
24:6)

When I read the words EPEIRASEN BEBHLWSAI here, the impression I get is,

“He even dared to profane the Temple, but we caught him”.

I’m rather surprised that no other translation in front of me reads it this
way. I guess the assumptions behind this rendering are:

1. They were accusing Paul of having brought Gentiles into the Temple
precincts reserved for Jews—which, if true, was not an attempt, but an
actual desecration.

2. I tend to think that TO hIERON EPEIRASEN BEBHLWSAI can read as “he
tempted the Temple by profaning it”, the Temple being metonymous for God.
