I embarked on a little study prompted by Caragounis'
EUAGGELION of diachronic study regarding the Greek
language. I made a notebook with four columns: Homeric
usage, Attic, Post-classical and Modern. I wrote the
appropriate information regarding meanings for verbs I
knew were used in the first three eras for sure. I
must say, being able to analyze the usages of a verb
across a long spectrum of time somehow became a
mnemonic device for retaining the ranges of meaning.
Perhaps the changes in nuance served as a contrast to
aide in memorization of less frequent usages. But
surprisingly, the changes in meaning spanning 2800
years have not been great, confirming Caragounis'
seminal point. Just thought I would share the mnemonic
potential I discovered.
