Thank you everyone for your very helpful replies. Regarding Lucian's
use of sebousi, it was mentioned that it is used a couple of times in
True History. However after reading it in english I can't find the
section dealing with worship or reverence of a slop jar or something
similar. Could someone please give me more details of where in True
History he has used sebousi?
I have found True Story (the other name for True History) at http://
www.sacred-texts.com/cla/luc/true/tru01.htm
and this has Greek and English on facing pages, and I can find one
reference to a jar on page 259 in Book 1, but no references to
worship or revere in english. In Book II on page 339 a reference to
worship of the gods of Night and the Cock, and a reference to jar on
page 345
In Lucian's other works, I can find the following references to
"worship" in:
1) The Tyrannicide, p. 182 paragraph 19, namely when he questions his
readers as to whether they should worship a sword as a god;
2) Lexiphanes p. 268 paragraph 12 " Well, Damasias fell down and
worshipped the Goddess (they have an Artemis by Scopas in the middle
of the court)"
3) THE SCYTHIAN, where - in the opening paragraph - he talks of how
Toxaris "presently came to be ranked among the Heroes; and sacrifice
is still paid to 'the Foreign Physician,' as he was styled after his
deification. Some account of the significance of this name, the
origin of his worship, and his connexion with the sons of Asclepius.."
Could you tell me what Greek word or words Lucian uses for worship in
these four ( I am unable to determine from the Greek facing page what
word is used for worship of Night and the Cock) instances?
I have found online volume 3 of Lucian's works published by the Loeb
Classical Library translated by AM Harmon with English and Greek on
facing pages. It's address is http://www.ancientlibrary.com/lucian-3/
as accessed on 23/12/2007. This however doesn't include any of the
titles mentioned in any of these posts regarding Lucian and sebousi.
I am interested as
