Through the success [lit. "proof"] of this service project, people are going
to be glorifying God for the obedience that goes with your public commitment
to the good news of Christ. (Mealy, agreeing with NASB, NIV, TEV etc.)
Through the testing of this ministry you glorify God by your obedience to
the confession of the gospel of Christ. (NRSV)
Through the proof of this ministry you will be glorifying God... (Lattimore)
Pace NRSV and Lattimore, I don't think Paul's saying that the Corinthians
are going to glorify God through the obedience of their commitment to the
good news-I think he's saying that those who receive the gift of financial
assistance will be glorifying God, acknowledging the truth that the
Corinthian community's commitment to the good news is genuine because it is
proven by their obedience to the principles of the good news (e.g. "Give,
and it'll be given to you", Luke 6:38; cf. Matt. 25:31ff.).
Luke 2:20 has DOXAZW EPI + dative meaning, "glorified God about all the
things they'd heard and seen".
Acts 4:21 has DOXAZW EPI + dative meaning, "glorified God about what had
happened".
Does anyone want to help me see the grammatical force of the interpretation
that says it's the Corinthians who will glorify God?
Webb Mealy
