AUTOS DE hO QEOS THS EIRHNHS hAGIASAI hUMAS hOLOKLHRON hUMWN TO PNEUMA KAI hH YUXH KAI TO SWMA AMEMPTWS EN THi PAROUSIAi TOU KURIOU hHMWN IHSOU THRHQEIH

If you check DE in BDAG or virtually any lexicon (even the woefully inadequate Newman _A Greek-English Dictionary of the New Testament_ or (ugh!) Strong's, you will find that "but" is one of the glosses given for it. Whether or not DE is adversative in any particular context is one which you will need to make.

I'm new here, so please bear with me if I breach protocol....

In 1 Thes 5:23, is it correct that DE might as well be considered as a
contrastive conjuction as anything else? My thinking on it is that Paul has
been exhorting his readers to live in a certain way, BUT now he assures them
that it is God who will sanctify (in other words, not by their living).

Does that make sense? I find no common translations that take it that way,
but it seems solid to me.
