I sort of view construction grammar as the phoenix that arose in the
1980s from the ashes of generative semantics in the 1970s. It forms
the basis for a lot of modern work in cognitive linguistics. It
certainly seems a lot more trendy now than when I was an undergrad 13
years ago.
Fillmore is still around, btw. He's responsible for FrameNet which
gets a lot of attention from the computational linguistics community.
