Subject: [B-Greek] Summers, Funk or Mounce
Dear Big Greeks,
I know there are a myriad of opinions on this subject. I am weighing these two options for a B-Greek club I am starting here (to informally work through a first year
grammar with interested friends).
Option A-Use what I had in college-Ray Summers Essentials of Greek NT.
with a workbook.
Option B-Use Mounce's BBG w/all the associated tools (workbook, videos & chart)
>From what I can see, option A has the following advantage...
it is less expensive for materials. It's familiar to me (paradigm forms).
It has a lot less material, so it may not seem as daunting to the newbies. (190 pgs vs 480 pgs)
Option B seems to be more thorough...has some neat tools, like the presentation videos
I could purchase...and just show that to the club. It seems to have a lot of
acceptance everywhere. Some effort is made to motivate the students through
the exegetical insights. The problems I see are that it is more expensive....and
sometimes the exegetical insight is way beyond where the student is at...and so
there is no way for the student to evaluate the accuracy of those.
I read in a post in the b-greek archives Dr. Conrad's recommendation of Funk's
grammar, but that is out of print and I am unfamiliar with it (learning curve) and the whole set is
$375...out of our budget range. So that is out for me.
How do you 'Big Greeks' think the Summers approach would work? Do you have
any threads you can send me to where this has been discussed? Or can you discuss
thia a bit for me if there are no recent threads on this? I don't really know which way
to go at this point.
Thank you!
