Yes, George is right. An adverb modifies a verb,
an adjective, or another
adverb. In both John 17:20 and 1 Cor 15:19 MONON
can modify an adverbial prepositional phrase. The
prepositional phrase modifies the
verb, and MONON modifies the phrase:

1 Cor 15:19: if we have hoped in Christ in this
life only

John 17:20: I do not ask concerning these only

I am grateful for this discussion, for I have
always stumbled a bit at 1 Cor 15:19 because I
tried to put MONON with the verb.

Yours,
Harold Holmyard
