Thanks everyone for your comments. I can see that it can
be quite a challenging exercise! Good for the brain I guess...
Pete.

This is an ambiguity like that of the "objective or subjective
genitive." The point of drawing in the parallels of Rom 15:12 and 1
Tim 4:10 is to establish a probability of usage in a potentially
ambiguous phrase (from our perspective). Both of these passages have
some form of the verb ELPIZW with EPI and a pronoun in the dative.
Since ELPIS is a "verbal noun" or an "event noun" it can, by analogy,
reasonably be expected be found in similar constructions with EPI and
the dative. Furthermore, Rom 15:14 is a quote from the LXX, and this
gives us a clue that EPIZW/ELPIS EP' AUTWi may be a semitism/
Septuagintalism [the MT has "the nations will [come] seeking him," =
(i.e. "rally to him)]. A phrase similar to the one in 1 John 3:3 is
found in Psalms of Solomon 5:14, TO DE DOMA SOU POLU META CRHSTOTHTOS
KAI PLOUSION KAI hOU ESTIN hH ELPIS EPI SE OU FEISETAI EN DOMATI.
"Your abundant and rich gift [comes] with goodness and you will not
be shrink back in generosity [i.e. gift] from the one whose hope is
in you.
