Dear Tom,
I would probably take this as "custom" and relate it back to 2:22-24 which is
referring to Exodus 13:2, 12 and Leviticus 12:8. All 2:27c "after the custom of
the Law" is referring to is found in 2:22, "according to the Law of Moses...
KATA TON NOMON MWUESEWS;" and 2:24, "according to that which is said in the Law
of the Lord...KATA TO EIRHMENON EN TOi NOMWi KURIOU."
Thus,
2:22 KATA TON NOMON MWUESEWS
2:24 KATA TO EIRHMENON EN TOi NOMWi KURIOU
2:27 KATA TO EIQISMENON TO NOMOU
Luke is using three similar terms or phrases to say the same thing: that Joseph
and Mary obeyed and were faithful to the Law.
Here, Law of Moses = Law of the Lord = Custom. In Symbolic Logic: A=B, B=C,
Therefore: A=C.
En Xristwi,
Rev. Bryant J. Williams III
