>They are certainly not at all what I hear in Orthodox churches or in
modern Greek. As far as I know, they are attempting to reconstruct
pronunciation of Attic Greek and other similar dialects, with
distinctions between o-mega and o-mikron, etc. I really hate Erasmian
pronunciation myself. 8-)
I'd be grateful if you could point me to some recordings, perhaps
off-list. Specifically, I'm curious as to whether there are any
recordings of re-constructed pronunciation of koine Greek as we think
it was pronounced in the first few centuries. The only major
difference that I can think of between what we think the pronunciation
was then and what it is in modern Greek is a distinction between eta
and iota, but there may be more. Someone pointed out a very good
guide on pronunciation earlier ...

I can understand your feeling on Erasmian. It's neither Greek nor
Attic. Caragounis has argued this at length.
When I am done with this email I think I need to report a shocking
item on one 'popular' Erasmian tradition. Shocking enough to lead
to change? We'll see. It's worse than many Erasmians realize.
In the meantime, you might want to listen to our Epiktetos booklet.
See the website in my signature below.
It is a reconstructed Koine,
basically with Hta added to modern as you've mentioned,
also [ue] a rounded, front vowel for 'OI' and Y-psilon.
Included in the booklet are readings of the letter of James
and Acts 17 Mars Hill.
Maybe later this summer I will be able to do
Luke and Acts. The past couple of months have been taken up with
getting pedagogical material recorded with multiple voices and edited,
and yes, it uses this pronunciation.
Living Koine Greek Part 2b is now complete.
PS: the website does offer a reading of 1 John 1 in this pronunciation.
