Dear Chad,

See Chapter X, pp. 266-296, especially 280-294, from The Life and Epistles of
St. Paul, by The Rev. W. J. Conybeare, M.A. and The Very Rev. J. S. Howson,
D.D., New Edition, Grand Rapids: Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Company, 1950.

The authors of the above work give a very good description of the city of Athens
including the Agora (with temples lining each side), the Areopagus (with the
Parthenon, Temples of Mars and The Furies and the judges seats), the religion of
Athens; then on pp.283-288, the philosophy of Athens especially the Stoics
(Zeno) and the Epicureans (Epicurus). It is the this summary of the background
of the Sermon on Mars Hill that really opens up the attack of Paul.

It is interesting that Paul's background in Tarsus and in Jerusalem gave him the
necessary information needed to address the assembly. There were three
preeminent schools of philosophy in the New Testament period: Alexandria, Athens
and Tarsus. Pual's use of QERAPEUW is a deliberate attack on the "pantheism" of
the Stoics and the "atheism" of the Epicureans.

En Xristwi,

Rev. Bryant J. Williams III
