Jeffrey,
Maybe my understanding of language isn't up to par but it seems to me
that you are asking for a grammatical reason for choosing a specific
lexical meaning. Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't that the role of context?
Now, I suppose I could have done a propositional analysis to narrow down
the meaning of this one word but I'm not certain how grammar is going to
lead to a conclusion. A grammatical analysis, such as diagramming the
sentence would tell me how each word in the sentence relates to the
others but that wouldn't reveal the author's intent.
Now, I don't deny the possibility of translating this phrase, τὴν ἀρχὴν
τη̂ς ὑποστάσεως THN ARCHN THS hUPOSTASEWS
as "the beginning of confidence," but I noted TDNT's comments on
hUPOSTATIS which emphasizes the translation "reality." I really don't
see much difference between "the beginning of reality" and "the
beginning of existence."
Sincerely,
Michael Abernathy
