Χαῖρε,
First, I finally have been able to get the Yahoo Mail beta to work again so I can now send Greek again [or should be able to -- we shall see].
There is only one use of προστάτις [PROSTATIS] in the NT, none in the LXX, and none in the Apostolic Fathers. It does appear in the papyri and in a 6th cent work as is witnessed by Moulton and Milligan.
προστάτις [PROSTATIS] 4368
We can supply no instance of the fem. προστάτις [PROSTATIS] (Rom 16:2), “protectress,” “patroness,” from our sources, but the masc. προστάτης [PROSTATHS] is common in various connotations, e.g. BGU IV. 11362 (c. b.c. 11) Ἀπολλώνιος . . . Τρύφωνι . . προστάτηι ἐράν[ων χαίρειν [APOLLWNIOS … TRUFWNI … PROSTATHI ERAN[[WN XAIREIN]] ], P Oxy II. 2994 (late i/a.d.) Διονυσίῳ προσ[τ]άτῃ Νεμερῶν κέκρηκα (δραχμὰς) η [DIANNUSIWi PROS[[T]]ATHi NEMERWN KEKRHKA (DRAXMAS) H]̅, “I have also lent Dionysius, the chief man of Nemerae, 8 drachmae” (Edd.), and ib. XI. 11501 (vi/a.d.) ὁ θεὸς τοῦ προστάτου ἡμῶν τοῦ ἁγίου Φιλοξένου [hO QEOS TOU PROSTATOU hHMWN TOU hAGIOU FILOCENOU], “the god of Saint Philoxenus our patron.” The title is applied to the office-bearer in a heathen religious association in
Foucart Associations Religieuses p. 202, No. 2034 (Imperial times) (= CIG I. 126) δοκιμα[ζέ]τω δὲ ὁ προστάτης [καὶ ὁ] ἀρχιερανιστὴς καὶ ὁ γραμματεὺς κα[ὶ οἱ] ταμίαι καὶ σύνδικοι [DOKIMA[[ZE]]TW DE hO PROSTATHS [[KAI hO]] ARXIERANISTHS KAI hO GRAMMATEUS KA[[I hOI]] TAMIAI KAI SUNDIKOI]: cf. SH Rom l.c., and Otto Priester ii. p. 75, n.1 See also CR i. p. 6, and Field Notes p. 166.
For the verb προστατέω [PROSTATEW], cf. P Petr II. 13(19)4 (c. b.c. 252) (= Witkowski, p. 18) where a son writes to his father, οὐ] μὴν οὐθὲν ἐμοὶ [ἔσται με]ῖζον ἢ σοῦ προστατῆσα[ι τὸν]ἐ[π]ίλοιπον βίον, ἀξίως [μὲ]ν σοῦ, ἀξίως δʼ ἐμοῦ [ [[OU]] MH OUQEN EMOI [[ESTAI ME]]IZWN H SOU PROSTATHSAI[[I TON]] E[[P]]ILOIPTON BION, ACIWS [[MEN]] SOU, ACIWS D' EMOU], “there will be nothing of more importance for me than to look after you for the remainder of life, in a manner worthy of you, and worthy of me”: for the subst. προστασία [PROSTASIA], cf. P Par 63113 (b.c. 164) (= P Petr III. p. 28) τοῦ προγεγραμμένου πλή(θο)υς προστασίαι [π]ροσεδρεύων [TOU PROGEGRAMMENOU PLH(QO)US PROSTASIAI [[P]]ROSEDREUWN], “putting pressure on the leaders of the persons just described”
(Mahaffy): and for the adj προστατικός [PROSTATIKOS], cf. P Oxy XVI. 18571 (vi/vii a.d.) ἀπέσ̣τ̣ε̣ι̣λα τῇ ὑμετέρᾳ προστατικῇ μεγαλοπρεπείᾳ . . . [APESTEILA THi hUMETERAi PROSTATIKHi MEGALAPREPEIAi …], “I send to your protecting magnificence . .”

Subject: [B-Greek] PROSTATHN PROSTATES
I have searched 157 references to PROSTATES in Perseus Tuft, and it
certainly was used by many authors. The only christian reference I
have found is the following:
“assist our sister Phoebe, a servant of the church in Cenchrea...for
she has been a great help [succourer, PROSTATIS προστάτις ]
to many people, including me.” (Romans 16:2).
Lucian used the term in relation to Peregrinus, the one time
Christian impersonator. He wrote it as PROSTATHN ροστάτην in
paragraph 11 of the Passing of Peregrinus.
Could someone tell me if there are any Christian references to these
terms in the first 350 years?
Regards
Jonathan
P.S UTF-8 definitely on!
