[B-Greek] Help Translating John 1:18

F.F.Bruce, a conservative and careful scholar, notes that when people like
R.C.Trench and B.F.Westcott (both, he says, argue from the standards of
classical Greek) differ as to the significance of these two synonyms AGAPAW
and FILEW, then he wonders if we should see such a distinct significance. He
says, "It is precarious, then, to press a distinction between the two
synonyms here." The Gospel & Epistles of John, p. 405. It is possible that
the lexical choice is stylistic without real semantic difference. Bruce
doubts that Jesus and Peter used different words even though John does.

Yes, the word love changes from FILEW (twice) to AGAPAW. At the same time,
please note that the words for sheep and feed change also, and I really
doubt
anyone holds to the theological significance of those words.
Hi Ron,
You're welcome. May I share my thoughts here?
I believe Jesus is giving Peter a motive for service rather than restoring
him to service.
1) If you 'agapao' Me (unconditionally) 'tend My lambs': lambs are young
Christians new in Salvation and learning the word of God. They need
nourishment daily.
2) If you 'agapao' Me (unconditionally) 'Shepherd My sheep': sheep here are
maturing Christians but still need pasture, food and milk, they're growing
in
faith.
3) Even if you 'phileo' Me like a brother 'Tend My sheep': here the sheep
are elderly and must be hand fed and looked after constantly: Christians
living
in a nursing home.
So, the motive for service is loving Jesus unconditionally, or as one love
his own family.
Doug.
