I am not sure there is a problem. I am a little fuzzy on the issue of  
predicate adjectives and predicate nouns filling the same slot with an  
equative verb. It seems to me that a predicate adjective or a  
predicate noun in the object slot has the same function. That isn't  
really the main issue in this post however which has to do with  
accusative modifying the predicate adjective.
