That is probably one of the truest things about graduate school. The
first year or two of graduate school is just learning what is available
and how to use it. Of course, at the same time you are neck deep in
other things, too :) But, that is part of the fun of it!

The point is that the usefulness of any reference work requires some  
investment of time and energy to become acquainted with the nature of  
the information delivered by the reference work and the way in which  
that information is structured. I might add, for what it's worth, that  
much of the spade work in graduate school is a matter of becoming  
familiar with and learning how to use the resources. There ain't no  
royal road to learnin'.
