Dear b-greek

I have subscribed to b-greek for a number years, and enjoy following
the topics, however I find the use of English letters difficult to
follow, say that the use of unicode for the Greek part of emails to
the list would be a definite improvement, and give the b-greek
archives more long term value ( if the archives are in utf8 then in
20, or 50 or 100 years time if the archives are still available then
people will be able to read them easily, if not then few if any will
be willing to plough through to see what they say).

From the computing point of view the following points, might help:-

    1) Whilst it would be possible to set things up so Unicode Greek
could also be change to the long established pratice of using mainly
capitals for Greek text, the reverse wuld be difficult as an automated
process would also change some English letters to Greek by mistake.

    2) if one sends a message as an email then it is filtered in
various ways, including the email programme used to send the email,
the mailing list and the email programme receiving the email. Any one
of these sets can lead to a loss or confusion of information. However
a simple test is to look at an email sent by yourself to the list - if
the email is unchanged then the problem can only be solved by the
receiver making changes.

With respect to the archives themselves it would be possible to write
a small script to change the older form into utf8, this would get this
99% correct, the utf8 version archives would then need to be proof
read and the errors corrected manually. I would be happy to write such
a script to convert things to uft8 format, though I would not be in a
position to proofread all the archines.

Regards
John Knightley
