I see... but cannot say this is very comforting... at least, not to me... I
would have expected Greeks to be the main teachers for non-Greeks as far as
Greek language of any age is concerned.

I've only heard Greeks read ancient Greek in modern. While students
may be told that rponuncation was different in the past, no one seems
to try to read ancient Greek any differently.
In addition, a few years ago I was able to enter a high school
classroom in Patmos where the students were being introduced
to ancient Greek. It was all modern pronounciation.
