the GNT and HB (http://www.deepbiblestudy.net/?p=741). I have said
much the same thing myself, but not as well, ad nauseam here on B-

Hi, Carl,
Tools like these Reader’s editions are often called “crutches.”
One time this guy asks Oedipus, “What’s the only animal
that walks on four legs in the morning, two legs in the afternoon,
and three legs in the evening?” Oedipus thinks about it for a
while and answers, “A person, who crawls on four legs as a kid,
walks on two legs as an adult, and uses a cane when old.”
So the guy says, “Yeah, but you are a relatively young
man, why are you using a cane?” Oedipus says that his
leg is a little sore, and he finds it easier to walk with the
cane as a crutch. “Okay,” the other guy says, “but if you
use that cane it will hamper your walking ability.
You will come to rely on that crutch. You’ll never
walk again! Do you want to end up crippled, maybe
even blind?” Oedipus says, “Stop nagging me.
You sound like my wife. She’s always bugging
me about using this cane. I tell her, ‘If I wanted to
live with a nag, I would have married my mother.’
It’s like those Reader’s Editions of Homer that
they sell in the AGORA. They helped me learn
Homer, and I still use them from time to time to
help with my vocab as my Ionic is still a bit rusty.”
So this other guy says, “Oedipus, I agree that these
Reader’s Editions are the single most helpful tool in
helping people learn Greek. But in the long run
reliance on one word glosses will harm your Greek.”
So Oedipus says EPI TOU PLHRWMATOS TOU
CRONOU, PANTES hHMEIS APOQNHSKOMEN.
“In the long run, we are all dead.”
There is some hard news to come out of this discussion
doch noch einmal. Zondervan intends to publish in 2010
a combined Reader’s Hebrew Bible and Greek NT.

Decoders of the world unite! Now, as Conrad might say,
we can learn how to pretend to know Greek AND Hebrew.
