This isn't the place for a discussion of what "the Jews believed", but I don't want anyone to be misled by leaving the below statement by B.Harris unchallenged. If anyone wants to argue that position, let them do so offlist.

As you well know, the Jews believed they would be saved by the merits (which included faith) of Abraham. This was a common understanding of Jewish thought in those days. They believed Abraham’s faith secured the salvation for most of his children.
