In regard to the question, "Can anyone think of any other case of two
symbols, where one means X and the other means, not the opposite of X,
but the complete absence of X?" This was the question that the Romans
asked when they were confronted with the concept of zero which was
introduced by the Arabs. If the thing is nothing, then just ignore it.
Writing the symbol "0 " for nothing is redundant. Of course the Roman
numeral system had no place markers. I wonder if the binary system used
in computers would ever have been invented or implemented if we still
used the Roman numeral system.
Merry Christmas,
John
