hEKASTOS THN GYNAIKA hOUTWS AGAPATW hWs hEAUTOV hH DE GYNE hINA FOBHTAI TOV ANDRA
I've recently encountered a proposal to take the hINA clause in this verse as subordinate to the main verb AGAPATW, yielding the following sense:
"Let each [man] so love his wife as himself in order that the woman might respect her husband" or "Let each [man] so love his wife as himself with the result that the woman respects her husband."
This rendering seems quite consonant with the overall thrust of the passage, and I believe rolling hH GYNH into the hINA clause is feasible in light of 2 Corinthians 2:4. But this take on the verse appears impossible to me in light of the coordinating conjunction DE. I've never been entirely comfortable with the notion that the subjunctive FOBHTAI is functionally imperative, but I don't see this proposal as a viable alternative.
Thoughts, fellow Greek aficionados?
