Leonard's original posting asked only about the etymology of the word.  Why would you then reply that "an etymology is not really what you need"?

I hope that by now we are all aware of the long, abusive history of "etymologizing" when considering semantics.  But Leonard didn't say anything about semantics.  He just asked about the etymology of the word and how it came together historically.

Maybe I misunderstand you, but it seems to me that the abuse of etymology does not mean that one should never talk about it.
