Fred (Ren),

PETROS is a man's name and is therefore masculine. PETRA is feminine for no apparent reason. Greeks often assigned gender to words on what appeared to be a random process. However, there are several words that, because they fall into certain categories, such as rivers, countries, nature, etc. will be assigned a certain gender like other words in that same category, but there is no significance to the gender. Like in English we typically think of a ship as "she." However, you will notice that more and more boats are given names that are not feminine. PETRA is a big rock or cliff. PETROS is also a rock, but a rather small one, especially compared to PETRA.
