Clayton:

Modern Greeks have no more of an advantage in studying Classical and Hellenistic Greek than does an English student. To modern Greeks, Hellenistic Greek is a completely different language. The only advantage a modern Greek student has is the barrier of getting use to the alphabet.

And, the modern Greek actually has a barrier that English (and other non-Greek) native speakers do not have: they have to 'unlearn' much of their vocabulary, syntax and grammar. The research and writings by Caragounis, who is a Greek, demonstrates this. His writings show no more of an insight than any other Greek scholar when it comes to understanding a Greek text.
