I have been very interested by the discussion about the meaning of ANWTHEN
in the dialog with Nicodemus. There are two key articles that have been
published recently upon this subject by Pierre-Marin BOUCHER (alas in
French, but I guess that some of us are able to read French) :
2008-a « Gennhqh/nai a;nwqen: la valeur de
l’adverbe a;nwqen en Jn 3,3 et 7. Ie partie. La réception chrétienne », *Revue
Biblique* 115-2, 191-215.
2008-b « Gennhqh/nai a;nwqen: la valeur de
l’adverbe a;nwqen en Jn 3,3 et 7. IIe partie. Les acceptions du terme
a;nwqen en grec classique et koinè non sémitisé », *Revue Biblique* 115-4,
568-595.
The first article deals with the patristic reception of this dialog : all
the Greek Fathers
who have commented the text interpret ANWTHEN as meaning "from above".
The article gives the translations of 6 important commentaries of that text.
It also
deals with the Syriac translations of that passage and shows that the Vetus
Syra
and another ancient Syriac translation gave the equivalent ܡܢ ܠܥܠ which
means
"from above".
