Like much else, there are different opinions about these. Mark Lightman initiated a
thread several months ago, "What makes a good commentary"; it's accessible in our
archives at http://lists.ibiblio.org/pipermail/b-greek/2009-April/048924.html

and I list there some of my favorites (on Classical Greek and Latin authors, not
NT commentaries).
