Perhaps I'm missing something here, but I don't really see how this Athenaeus text
establishes a consecutive sense for EF' hWi in Rom 5:12. In this instance it would
appear to me that the hWi governed by EPI has a clear antecedent GRAMMATEIDION
( = "menu" or "bill of fare") and is not comparable to the EF' hWi in Rom 5:12, where
I think we must understand EP' EKEINWi hWi, "on the basis of that fact, namely ... "
or "to know on the basis of which (scil. "the menu" [the GRAMMATEIDION]).
Moreover EF' hWi in the Athenaeus text is followed by an infinitive indicatring purpose;
that's very different from the aorist indicative hHMARTON in Rom 5:12.
I confess that I haven't read Fitzmyer's article and shouldn't prejudge the argument --
but I don't think that this Athenaeus passage is relevant to the question of a consecutive
function of EF' hWi in Rom 5:12.
