[B-Greek] Some details re printed edition of SBLGNT

Colleagues,
in his message below, Mark asked about details re the print edition. No one has seen a copy yet, AFAIK, and it likely won't be available until the SBL meeting. In the meantime, I can offer a few details in response to Mark's questions:
--it has a sewn binding, basically the same as (or at least very similar to) my edition of the Apostolic Fathers (3rd ed., 2007), which lies very flat--so I would expect the SBLGNT to do the same;
--re "Kivar": acc. to Wikipedia, this is "a flexible bookbinding material ... often used in binding Bibles".
--dimensions will be somewhat larger than my AF edition, which has a trim size of ca. 5" x 7.25"; the SBLGNT reportedly will have a trim size somewhere in the neighborhood of 5.5" x 8.5"?(6x9 max).
--don't know the weight of the paper yet, which in turn will determine the weight of the book, which will be ca. 540 pp.
--don't know the font size; but from mock-up pages I've seen, it looks very readable.
--durability: time will tell ...
Sorry I don't have any more info than this; like you, I'm also anxious to get a print copy in my hand.
thanks,
Mike

Thanks, Wieland, for the review. Very helpful in giving us a sense of what the
SBLGNT is and is not.
Textual criticism per se is not within the bounds of the list, but what IS at
the very heart of this list is how one reads the Greek NT, and with what. I am
very curious to see how the SBLGNT, particularly the print edition, catches on.
It's not a question of NA 28 RIP. It's not a question of whether it will
replace the UBS/NA/Deutsche Bibelgesellschaft products. I personally cannot
imagine owning less than say, four print copies of the GNT
http://www.amazon.com/the-Four-Best-Greek-New-Testaments/lm/R1RWHATIQHGH8H/ref=cm_lm_byauthor_title_full
and so the question is whether SBLGNT can crack the top five. The question is
whether this is a good FIRST GNT for people to have. What Holmes' apparatus
does is draw attention to, in a more user friendly way, just how complicated on
the one hand and not-really-all-that-consequential on the other hand is the
problem of establishing the GNT text. If students really want to get into the
heart of darkness of any given reading, they need to do on one-line search,
where they will find people like Holmes and Wieland very helpful. (But my advice
for textual criticism? "Don't get out of the boat. Never get out of the
boat!" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9kT8rTsaHI4 ) For a text that, as
Wieland says, one can read in bed or on the bus, the question then turns on the
external features of the SBLGNT. So, for those who have seen it, I have some
questions.
What are itσ exact dimensions? What is a "kivar cover"? How large is the
font? I assume it does not include a dictionary. Since the apparatus is
relatively small, the book should be extra light weight. Is it? Is it
flexible? Does it lay flat when open? My UBS 3, which I don't use any more
because of the duct tape and missing pages, was about as durable as a Nepali
prayer flag. Are we sure the SBLGNT will hold up any better?
Maybe someone who has the book or will get it at the SBL meeting in Atlanta can
take some pictures of it and share them.
They say that the ratio of Greek New Testaments to New Testament Greek scholars
is five to four. That's a joke, of course, but it won't be funny in few years,
thanks to technology, on-demand printing, gracious moves to release works into
the public domain and the model that Mike Holmes and Rick Brannan have presented
us with in this great effort. ευγε φιλοι! EUGE FILOI!

Subject: [B-Greek] Analysis of the SBL GNT in the Gospels
I have checked Mike Holmes' SBL text in the Gospels now.
This is the shortest GNT ever!
It is 465 words shorter than NA. Even 126 words shorter than WH!
- Good to see he is getting rid of (almost) all those single brackets.
- Holmes is accepting 6 Western non-interpolations.
- There are about 230 differences to NA in the Gospels. Of these, Holmes
follows WH about 48% of the time and the Byzantine text about 44%.
