Walt HRWTHSEN:

<Did anyone ever translate the New Testament into a more Atticised form?>

Hi, Walt,

Not that I am aware of, no. But Nonnos of Panopolis, in the 5th Century, wrote
a paraphrase of the Gospel of John in Homeric Greek, the so-called TEV (Today's
Epic Version.) You can find it here:

http://www.veritatis-societas.org/203_CSHB/0390-0429,_Nonnos,_Metaphrasis_Evangelii_Ioannei__%28CSHB%29,_GR.pdf

Nonnos' peri-language can be used to settle disputes about the Greek text
without slipping into the danger of starting a dispute about the English. For
example, the meaning of KATALAMBANW in John 1:5b:

John 1:5b Koine:

καὶ ἡ σκοτία αὐτὸ οὐ κατέλαβον. (KAI hH SKOTIA AUTO OU KATELABON)

John 1:5b TEV:

καὶ ζόφος οὔ μιν ἔμαρψε. (KAI ZOFOS OU MIN EMARYE)

Since it appears no one has rendered the Greek NT into Attic, let me do one
verse, so that everyone will know what it would look like.

Koine Rev 21:1b:

καὶ ἡ θάλασσα οὐκ ἔστιν ἔτι. (KAI hH QALASSA OUK ESTIN
ETI.)

Rev 21:1b TAV (Today's Attic Version.)

καὶ μὴν ἡ θάλαττα οὐκ ἔστιν ἔτι. (KAI MHN hH QALATTA OUK
ESTIN ETI.)

You say tomato and I say tomahto, thalassa, thalatta, gignosko, ginosko, let's
call the whole thing off.

Subject: [B-Greek] attic writers during koine period or post koine

I was wondering also if there were any Christian writers that "atticised." Did
anyone ever translate the New Testament into a more Atticised form?
Thanks.
