[B-Greek] New critical GNT from Mike Holmes!

My apology for making a misleading statement, but, when I see an edition,
whether W & H or NA27, prominently displayed on the title page, I think I'm
entitled to suppose that such is the text used.

Colleagues,
Permit me a clarification: I do not indicate on the "title page" that I follow
Westcott and Hort, nor is there any such statement in the Introduction. The
website www.sblgnt.com has just been updated, and one can now download not only
the Preface but the entire edition for free. I encourage folks to do so, and
then to read the Introduction carefully; it details how the edition was created.
The Westcott & Hort text was, in fact, the starting point of the edition, but no
more than that: the WH text was extensively modified in the process of editing
the SBLGNT (see the Introduction for details), and the SBLGNT, as the figures
helpfully supplied by James Spinti indicate, differs from WH at 879 instances of
textual variation. It also differs in terms of orthography, capitalization,
paragraphing, etc.
thanks,
Mike Holmes

I find it interesting that, although Holmes agrees more with the NIV text, he
indicates on the title page that he follows W & H.  I just noted a particular
instance in Re 22.11 where Holmes has ῥυπαρευθήτω hRUPAREUQHTW following the
Byz Maj (and, of course Robinson & Pierpont) whereas W & H have ῥυπανθήτω
hRUPANQHTW (as does NA27).  I must therefore qualify my statement that you
have Holmes if you already have W & H since there are differences.

Mark,

Here's a description by Michael Holmes himself:
http://evangelicaltextualcriticism.blogspot.com/2010/10/sbl-and-logos-bible-software-announce.html

He says:
SBLGNT-WH: 6,049 agreements, 879 disagreements
SBLGNT-Treg: 5,701 agreements, 1,227 disagreements
SBLGNT-NIV: 6,312 agreements 616 disagreements
SBLGNT-RP: 969 agreements 5,959 disagreements  <---this is the Majority Text
Also, the SBLGNT differs from NA27/UBS4 at 542 places, and thus the two will
agree at 6386 places.

HTH,
James

I'm looking forward to seeing this text.  Not that one thing has anything to do
with the other, but I am a big fan of Holmes' Apostolic Fathers, both the text
and Baker House's fine edition.  I hope that the printed version of Holmes' GNT
will have a very large font and thin paper so it is portable and flexible.  They

would do well to bind it like the Zondervan RGNT.  Please don't print the OT
quotations in italics.

George's point about the apparatus is well taken, but perhaps different editions

will have different apparati.  Mike A. is talking about people like people like
me when he refers to people who cannot really judge the manuscript evidence,
except that μη ειδως ουδε οιομαι ειδεναι.  (MH EIDWS OUDE OIOMAI EIDENAI)  Thus
the apparatus as George described it would be helpful to me, just knowing
whether a reading appears in Robinson or WH or NA 27 or NA 17 would be of
interest.

George, how did you access the text?  How would you characterize it in general?

Does Holmes adopt many reading from the Majority Text?

I have it.  I am somewhat disappointed in that it doesn't list ancient
manuscripts in support of any particular reading.  It rather lists modern
editions which adopt particular readings.
