There is no gerund in the Greek (nor does Greek have a gerund; the infinitive
might be Englished as a gerund, but there is no gerund in Greek). As for the
question, what the previous respondents have said seems right on target:
TOUTO refers to the whole conception set forth in the clause introducing the
sentence.
