Dear list - thanks for the the spectrum of views. I may have misled some with my reference to the man who had been born blind in John 9:35. The Alexandrian based translations have Jesus asking the man if he believes in the son of the man, which is an odd question if it is idiom for a human, which was my point. However, I see that translations from the Byzantine texts say that Jesus asked him if he believed in the Son of the God, which less surprisingly has the man asking Jesus,"Who is he, Lord, that I might believe on him?".
On a lighter note - Do I hear Paul crying "I am a Semantic Minimalist (or Maximalist)" on b-Greek and causing a riot?
