What I do with my students is to get them reading a short passage of the NT aloud every day - even if the grammar and vocabulary is a bit beyond their current level.
One feels like an idiot to begin with, but we just have to speak a language aloud in order to learn it effectively.
Writing a short passage out, while saying the words aloud, is also a help.
After we can read it - then we go over the grammar and vocabulary afterwards - but reading and hearing, even if the pronunciation is not the best, starts to get the ear and the brain receptive to the language.
Until one can speak and hear the words, translation is an exercise in mental analysis rather than an attempt at communication.
