Hi Oun
I am not sure. I think ECONTAS would have to construe with DIAKONOUS and the
implied DEI and EINAI of verse 2. It seems more likely if it was going to be
construed with a participle, it would be ONTES of verse 10. Then by construing
with ONTES it would only seem natural to include the idea of serving found in
the verb DIAKONEITWSAN. That was part of my thinking anyway. The problem,
however, is that GUNAIKAS is in the accusative case and not the nominative as
one would expect.
However, that being said, I was just trying to have some fun with *what if.*
Usually a convoluted construction will not be the correct understanding, and I
was really trying to do some somersaults to find a middle view. However, as one
person reminded me, *Those who try to take the middle of the road usually end up
as roadkill.* : > ) The more natural reading is reflected in both Iver’s and
Barry’s take.
The only problem that remains is trying to identify GUNAIKAS. It certainly would
have been easier if Paul had just written deaconess rather than women/wives,
then there would be no need for this post. : > )
Cordially,
Blue Harris
