As a warning - one of my colleagues at a British University used his (non-medical) doctor title in private life - and was called to an emergency delivery of a baby.

Though I must confess, my website is called "Dr. Shirley"
Call me anything - but call me for supper :-)

One of my Classics professors in college, Jaye Freyman, if called "Doctor," would respond "Take two aspirin and call me in the morning," and then go on to emphasize that "Professor" was the proper title, and that the real doctor in his family was his brother, the internist...
