The reinstatement aspect of Peter is intensified in light of Jesus
post-resurrection private chat with Peter (Lk 24:33-35; 1 Cor 15:5) prior
to the Jn 21 account. It seems safe to assume that that chat would
have focused on Peter's failure and Jesus' forgiveness in relation to it.
THEN in Jn 21 Jesus probes Peter publicly in a repeated fashion with support
for Peter's role of leadership. But Peter was surely wondering if Jesus
really forgave his failure in light of the repeated question.
Whatever the innuendo of these events, the public reinstatement of Peter
is certainly more of a history of redemption focus than some subtle
play on synonyms.
