Speaking as a non-pro on these matters, I certainly agree about the
importance of the hands-on approach.

When I took Bernadette Brooten's Intro/History to the NT class, probably
the high point of an all-together wonderful course was when she took a
half-dozen or so of us over to Widener library where we examined (and held
in our very hands!) the set of NT fragments that Harvard has in its
collection (including one of the Oxy. Greek Thomas fragments).

The only (mildly) unfortunate aspect of this was that it happened on the
last day of the semester. Nothing made it so clear (to me, anyway) to
what degree _this_ is what the whole schmere is about; these fragments
--and others like them-- is where the NT really lives. It was as if the
rest of the course had been merely commentary on turning these into the
NRSV.
