Mark 4:3; a sower/the sower

Date: Tue Jun 17 1997 - 17:11:45 EDT

Isn't this the generic use of the article where an individual is cited as
typical of his class? BAG offers hO OIKODESPOTHS in the parables as an
example of the generic use of the article. If this is a generic use, then
what "the sower" does is typical of what all sowers do, and "a sower" in
English is quite appropriate. Similarly, NASB translates "the bishop" in
I Tim. 3:2 as "a bishop."
