I teach adults, usually in churches, but at the beginning of my
classes in a particular location, I usually do a 6-session "Western
History" crash course. I put a timeline along one wall, marked with
dates from 1000 BCE to 2000 CE. Then, in 6 1-hour sessions, I have the
class help me place photographs along the timeline of major events in
each of 6 categories. I found most of the photographs on the internet,
and I print them on 6 different colors of paper, one for each topic:
political history, art, music, science and technology, literature, and
philosophy/religion.
By the end of the 6 weeks (or one long day, as I've also done it!),
folks have a timeline on one wall that remains there for the duration
of the classes. They also have a better sense of Western History,
since most of them are fairly well able to plug in to *some* of the
topics/events, and the others start making sense for there. The act of
figuring out together where the photographs go on the timeline and
talking about the relationships between the events and topics is a
great (and fun!) learning experience.
If you want more specific information (or a copy of the timelines I
use), drop me an e-mail.
