Smyth's _Greek Grammar_ is unquestionable the best reference grammar for
classical Attic Greek in English, but it is decidedly NOT a textbook from
which to learn Attic. For that, there are numerous textbooks on the market,
including the old but rather spare Chase & Phillips, good modern classical
types represented by Mastronarde and by Anne Groton (_Alpha to Omega_), to
the types concentrating on developing reading skills of the sort I prefer:
Oxford's _Athenaze_ and Cambridge UP's JACT textbook, _Reading Greek_ (the
one I have been teaching with for two decades).
