Your comment about Mary's preoccupation with the flesh of Jesus is quite apt. The
evangelist obviously didn't put in a comment for pure humourous value -- it has a
function. I think the evangelist is making a point that Jesus is actually alive bodily.
His corpse has risen and is no longer in the tomb. This recurrection is physical (as
opposed to purely spiritual) in such a way that Mary can cling to Jesus and detain him
physically. I take the humourous comment to be a statement of the evangelist expressing
belief in the physical, bodily resurrection of Jesus. The very next pericope about Thomas
has the same theme. Thomas can physically put his fingers into Jesus' wounds.
