<DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2>The previous verse has Esau as the subject of
comparison with one who is a profane person (BEBHLOS). The "GAR" at the
beginning of verse 17 and following METANOIAS are explanatory and causal
(although I could see how the&nbsp;latter GAR is also explanatory). Furthermore,
the context is referring back to the Genesis 26:29-34 and 27:30-40 incidents
where in&nbsp;27:34 &amp; 38, Esau, who was truly "a profane person," "cried
with a great and exceeding bitter cry...lifted up his voice and wept."&nbsp; The
NIV is misleading here, because Heb 12:17b is translating EUREN to mean, "to
bring about." 12:17b should be translated as "for (because?)&nbsp;a change of
attitude (METANOIAS)&nbsp;was no place&nbsp;found." The verse is stating that
"no change of attitude could be found in Esau." It is not stating that Esau
"could bring about a change of mind" as if&nbsp;Esau had been&nbsp;wanting to
repent.&nbsp; Esau is being searched for 'any' sign of repentance (change of
mind/attitude) by the Lord, and <STRONG>'none' </STRONG>was found. What an
indictment against Esau. The Christian, who is to seek peace and holiness, is to
continually take care of the grace of God.</FONT></DIV>
