1. C. thyoides (L.) BSP.,* WHITE C., ATLANTIC WHITE C., JUNIPER. Medium sized tree. Bark gray to brown, fibrous; wood light brown. Leaves scale-like, mostly 1-2 mm long, closely imbricate, turning brown the 2nd year, long persistent. Male cones 2-3 mm long, shedding pollen March-April; female cones globose, 5-7 mm in diam., shedding seeds Oct.-Nov. Of 1st year; sporophylls not overlapping; seeds small with narrow wing. Acid swamps, bogs, and wet sands, vp. [Va., Ga., Fla., Ala., Miss.] Without fruit this tree is often mistaken for red cedar. The wood is very light weight and very durable, much used for posts and poles.
